The Importance of Patient Education

In the case of chronic disease care, patient education is extremely crucial. There is no easy cure for these issues. They require long-term therapy and regular checkups to prevent the diseases from becoming life-threatening. Patients must understand enough about their illnesses and practise enough therapies to be effective in managing their ailments. People who have recently been diagnosed with diabetes, for example, must learn how to give insulin and monitor their blood sugar levels.

The most recent National Health and Morbidity Survey revealed several interesting facts about the health of millennials:

  • Diabetes affects 8.6% of the population
  • Hypertension affects 14.7 percent
  • Obesity affects 13.9 percent of the population.

According to the most recent national health survey, the number of young individuals developing chronic diseases is increasing.

The other most common disease that are increasingly affecting Malaysian millennials are :

  • Mental health
  • Depression & anxiety disorder
  • High cholesterol

Diet and exercise are common-sense approaches to better management for some of these chronic diseases. However, a physician's knowledge of some chronic disorders will assist patients in going beyond a basic, common-sense understanding of their conditions. For example, in a Medscape article titled "Helping Diabetes Patients Exercise Without Fear," Dr. Anne Peters warns people with diabetes not to have too much insulin in their systems before beginning to exercise — with the caveat that, because they may be trying to lose weight, they may not want to regulate insulin solely through diet.

She offers precise recommendations, such as 15 to 30 grams of carbs for every 30 minutes of exercise, as well as a post-workout relaxation and possible insulin dose and carbohydrate intake. Because not all patients have access to this information, it is critical for doctors and nurses to stay up to date on suggested therapies and to encourage their patients to exercise, eat, and take medications as directed.

It's beneficial to use a team approach to patient education in order to help patients manage their chronic conditions😊
